Welcome back to History in Galveston, where we bring you closer to the heart of Juneteenth and its important historical markers in Galveston, Texas. This episode is proudly presented by the Galveston Island African American Treasure Group. Our mission today—just like every other day—is to dive deep into the stories that define who we are, why we are, and what we’re about.
In this episode, we focus on the historic Reedy Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, often hailed as the ‘Mother Church of Methodism’ in Texas. Our special guest, Sharon Gillins, a genealogist and bona fide BOI (Born on the Island), guides us through the rich narrative of this iconic church and its significance in the African American heritage of Galveston.
Sharon shares that her passion for genealogy helps people uncover their past, emphasizing the importance of family history. ‘History starts in your home, in your family,’ says Sharon. She teaches methodology to both African American and other genealogists nationwide to better research African American family histories.
